Hippotherapy is an evidence based effective approach used in the treatment of a wide variety of conditions. Below is a list of conditions that it is commonly used in, however this is not an exhaustive list. Please contact us if you have any queries.
Hippotherapy can be used to treat individuals with a both physical, language and cognitive disabilities. Examples of these conditions include:
- Autistic Spectrum Disorder
- Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder
- Cerebral Palsy
- Developmental Delay
- Down Syndrome
- Dyspraxia
- Learning Disabilities
- Muscular Dystrophy
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Personal Injury (for example following a car accident)
- Sensory Processing Disorders
- Stroke
- Traumatic Brain Injury
Hippotherapy is open to children, teenagers and adults. The only limitation is the size difference. Dependant on level of trunk control facilitating some larger adults to achieve certain positions whilst on a horse can be more challenging. With smaller children on smaller ponies there is a wider range of positions accessible in treatment.
Suitability for hippotherapy can be established by an initial assessment performed away from the stables normally in the individuals home environment.
